A Complete Guide You Should Know About Brass Turnbuckles

February 14,2022

In this guide, we will look at the characteristics of brass turnbuckles at their different types and uses.

What Is Brass Turnbuckle?

The turnbuckle, also known as a bottlescrew, is a specialized piece of turnbuckle hardware in modern times that has been around for a long time. A brass turnbuckle is a device that joins the ends of two lengths of rope, cable, or wire and turns to loosen or tighten the connection. It is this exact hardware makes very strong structure possible. Let’s learn more about turnbuckles together.

Parts Of Turnbuckle

There are three main components of turnbuckles: body, nut and end fittings.

Body

It is the metal frame in the center of a device connecting two threaded ends. Tension is adjusted by turning the body itself by extending and retracting the end fittings.

Body has two types: closed body or open body. The open body turnbuckle is more traditional, with threads visible through the body frame. Enclosed body turnbuckles, also known as tube bodies, wrap threads in enclosed frames to create slimmer profiles that fit tighter Spaces.

Nut

Also known as lock nut, the nut can be placed on the thread of the end joint and tightened against the turnbuckle body to help prevent equipment from becoming loose.

End fitting

These are the two joints that screw into the opposite ends of the turnbuckle body. One end joint is right-handed and the other is left-handed. This allows you to rotate the body after installation to adjust tension without moving the end fittings.

The three main types of end fittings are included:

  • Hook end: It is used for temporary connections, and easier to install and attach or separate from other rigging components than clamp and eye-to-eye turnbuckles. However, its usefulness is much lower due to the lack of a safety latch, which can accidentally come loose from the attached rigging assembly, causing the hook to fall off.
  • Jaw end: It consists of jaw, bolts and nuts, but depending on the size, some jaw turnbuckles are only fitted with split pins and pins. They can attach the wire rope slings directly to the clamp end and pin them to the ring bolts and lugs that cannot be opened.
  • Eye end: It is for straight line pulling or straight line application only, not for lifting purposes. They have no moving and opening parts and are designed to pass shackles or quick links at each eye end and then attach wire rope slings or other approved rigging assemblies.

Characteristics Of Brass Turnbuckle

Usually, turnbuckle is made of copper, iron, and stainless steel. Brass turnbuckles are extremely resistant to rust and corrosion. If corrosion is a problem, brass is your priority. Furthermore, price of brass is not high.

Common Uses Of Turnbuckle

Usually, turnbuckles are used to adjust the tension of cables and tie rods. These components range in size from small units designed to tension fence lines to turnbuckles weighing several tons, making up the structural elements of large buildings.

Industries that use turnbuckles often include:

  • Maritime transport: Turnbuckles are usually used to tensioner lashing and rigging parts of ships.
  • Construction: Turnbuckles are commonly used to provide tension support for suspension Bridges, large buildings, and highway guardrail cable assemblies.
  • Aviation: The cables and wires that exist in an aircraft's structure -- wings, flight control systems, etc. -- are held tight by turnbuckles.
