Nuts are mostly hexagonal in shape, followed by square. Today we will introduce you the different types, and hope to give you some reference.
Different types of nuts
✔️Cap nuts
There are two types of cap nuts. One is the low, or standard cap nut. The other is the high cap nut. The high cap nut is wider and taller to protect extra long studs. There are also self-locking cap nuts that have twisted threads in the hexagonal area to create a tight friction fit to prevent the nut from loosening due to vibration.
✔️Barrel Nuts
Also known as cross dowels or dowel nuts, barrel nuts are made up of steel material and are known to be a specialized type of nut that is very commonly used in aerospace and is also found to be used for furniture purposes.
These types of nuts mainly have very thin bolt pieces and metal parts, as well as commonly used billet or forged parts. Barrel nuts are preferred over standard nuts and bolts because they do not require a flange to be machined or forged on the receiving part. This reduces their own weight.
✔️Furniture cross pin barrel nuts
The furniture cross pin barrel nut, which is designed to resemble a cylinder, is used specifically for bolts in furniture as a connector between two pieces of wood. The threaded hole inside the nut is the most versatile, and it goes through both sides of the wood panel.
The installation process involves aligning the two pieces of wood and then joining them, then drilling the bolt holes through one piece of wood and into the other. Barrel nuts are also common in flush mount furniture. Both long bolts and barrel nuts are used to secure T-joints.
✔️Cage nuts
Also very commonly referred to as captive or clip nuts, cage nuts consist of square nuts in a spring steel cage that is wrapped around the nut. They are responsible for holding the nut in a specific position behind the hole whenever they are found to be loose. Cage nuts came into use in 1952 and 1953. Cage nuts were designed to require the insertion of a tool to install the cage nut into the hole. Newer designs also have a squeeze and release feature that allows for tool-less installation.
Square hole cage nuts are technically known as those nuts that can be easily used for all those places where square holes are found to be punched as they are needed. This is an old-fashioned captive nut that uses a spring-loaded clip that usually holds the nut in place and slides over the edge of a thin plate.
The application of this nut is usually in a slightly looser cage, allowing for minor adjustments in its alignment. This is responsible for reducing the possibility of stripping the threads during equipment installation and removal. The size of the spring steel clip is responsible for determining the thickness of the panel in which the nut is clamped. In this case, the size of the clamp is determined mainly by the distance between the edge of the panel and the inside of the hole.
