Clip Nuts
A clip nut is a type of nut that is also known as a sheet metal nut or quick nut. A clip-on nut is said to be a specially designed nut that clips onto a metal plate. These are the most common types of captive nuts that consist of cage nuts.
Types of Clip Nuts: The clip nut is the most common type and it comes in a variety of forms based on: where they clip on, shape and thread type. Each type of captive nut is designed to be perfect for even a small range of sheet metal gauges. It is worth noting that these types of clamps are made of spring steel.
✔️G-nuts
✔️J-nuts
J-nuts are nuts that are found clamped to the edge of sheet metal. This type of nut is named as such because it has the shape of a letter J where the threads are found on the longer side of the "J". The short retaining leg does not allow for more float, which is thought to cause misalignment, and the nut is found to unclip the sheet metal freely.
✔️Square nuts
A square clamp nut is one that does not fit on the edge of the sheet metal although it has a square hole or slotted edge. It is also known as a square nut and it has a sheet metal retainer that protrudes on either side of the nut. These feet are formed with "lips" that usually grip the sheet metal object. Before the nut is tightened, you will be able to observe it floating in the hole or slot, and only when the nut is found to be fully tightened, it will press against the lips on the outside of the retainer, thus holding itself in the desired position.
✔️U-nuts
U-nuts have the same characteristics as J-nuts, except that both of their legs seem to be the same length. This helps retain the clip, which is usually formed on the non-threaded leg. It is responsible for helping the nut get into the unscrewed position. The threads found in these types of nuts are technically the same as those present in the quick nut style, which may be combined with the nut or may be found in other major parts, which are often referred to as tapping.
Among the U-nut types, there is a standard version and a wide plate version, which is what we usually know. The standard version has a solid hinged section, while the wide plate version has a longer hinge as well as a center section cut to make it easier to install.
Coupling Nut
Also known as an extension nut, the coupling nut is a non-other fastener that is fully threaded and intended to join two male threads, most commonly a threaded rod. The fastener usually has a hex on the outside so that a wrench can hold it freely. There are variations, usually including a reduced coupling nut, for joining two different sizes of threads, and it is found with a sight hole for observing the total engagement of the left-hand threads found with the coupling nut. ( Type of coupling )
These nuts were found to be used to form long rod assemblies from shorter rods. The rods were also threaded with the coupling nuts only at a specific distance.
Coupling nuts are found to be applied to tighten rod assemblies inward or to compress rod assemblies outward. Coupling nuts are one of the frequently used nuts for making bearings at home as well as sealing tie rods or presses at home. The main advantage of the coupling nut over the standard nut in this application is that there are more threads that can be observed to engage with the bolt as far as its length is concerned. This is the reason that allows you to spread the force over more threads, which is responsible for reducing the possibility of stripping or galling the threads due to the effects of heavy loads.
