Locking Methods of Bolts and Nuts

February 15,2022

Bolts and nuts are the most commonly used and common fastening parts in various equipment, but they are very critical on some occasions. Once they are loose and fall, they may cause fatal damage to the equipment. How to prevent the loosening of bolts and nuts is a problem we often face.

Today, as a leading Wing Butterfly Nuts supplier, we will share with you some methods to prevent bolts and nuts from loosening.

Common bolt locking methods

Cross Threaded Bolt locking can usually be divided into friction locking, mechanical locking, and other methods.

  • Friction locking

It mainly includes double nut, spring washer, self-locking nut (one end of the nut is made into non-circular closing or radial closing after peak opening, the closing is expanded after the nut is tightened, and the elastic force of the closing is used to compress the screw threads), thread glue and other methods.

  • Mechanical locking

It mainly includes round nut, winged washer, grooved nut, cotter pin, stop gasket, locknut, etc.

Working principle of jam nut: it is permanently attached to the thread with special engineering plastics so that the internal and external threads will produce strong reaction force when the engineering plastics are extruded in the tightening process, which greatly increases the friction between the internal and external threads and provides absolute resistance to vibration.

This resistance is completely distributed in the whole meshing section of the internal and external threads, and the friction has nothing to do with the tightening pressure between the internal and external threads. Different from the previous stopping methods, it depends on the friction generated by the pressure after the screw is tightened. Once the screw is slightly loosened and the pressure is reduced, the friction disappears quickly and loses the stopping effect, resulting in the loosening of the screw.

However, the disadvantage of plastic anti-loosening is that it is affected by the environment and can not meet the requirements of high temperature and severe cold.

  • Other methods to prevent looseness

It mainly includes end riveting locking, punching point locking, spot welding locking, bonding locking, series steel wire locking, and locking glue locking.

Anti loosening glue anti loosening is a commonly used anti loosening method, which can be divided into pre-coated chemical glue, dispensing glue; According to purpose, it can be divided into anti loosening glue, sealing glue, and adjusting glue; According to the reaction type, it can be divided into nylon glue and chemical glue.

Common nut locking methods

At present, there are three mature locking methods: friction locking, mechanical locking, and permanent locking.

These three kinds of locking methods have their advantages and disadvantages. Among them, permanent locking is nondetachable locking, and friction and mechanical locking are detachable lockings.

Common mechanical locking methods include stop washer, cotter pin, and so on.

The common friction locking is generally using washers, self-locking, double nuts, and so on.

These locking methods are common and widely used. Under normal circumstances, a fastener will use one of them, and this locking mode is clear at a glance.
